Cryptid Hunter Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information the Cryptid Hunter app collects, how we use it, who can see it, and how you can delete it. Cryptid Hunter is made by Bruthurs LLC ("we", "us"). Contact: admin@bruthurs.com.
1. Information we collect
Your account
- If you sign up with email: your email address and a password. We never see your password; our sign-in provider stores only a secure hash of it.
- If you sign in with Apple or Google: the email address the provider shares with us. With Apple, that can be a private relay address ("Hide My Email"). We don't ask for your name.
- A username, which you choose when you first sign in. You can also add a short bio and a profile photo.
What you post
- Sighting reports: where and when it happened, what you saw, the conditions, and any photos or audio you attach.
- Comments, the "believe" or "doubt" votes you cast, reports you save, and people you follow.
- Hunts you plan or join: meeting point, time window and notes; during a live hunt, the logs, marks, photos and alerts you add.
Your location
We use your location only while the app is open. We never track you in the background.
- While you use the app: we use your location to show what's near you and to work out tonight's odds. Every mile or so, or every 30 minutes, the app saves your approximate position to your account so we can alert you about nearby reports.
- Home location: if you set one, we save it for nearby alerts.
- When you report a sighting: we save the location you pin.
- During a live hunt you're tracking: the app sends your precise position about every 10 seconds while it's open, and records your track for the hunt's log. This stops when you leave the hunt or it ends.
Your camera, photos and microphone
We only access the photos and recordings you choose to attach. We remove location data embedded in photos before uploading them.
Pro subscription
If you subscribe to Pro, we record your plan and when it renews. Payment is handled by Apple or Google, and we never receive your card details.
What we don't do
- We don't show ads.
- We don't use analytics or advertising trackers.
- We don't track you across other apps or websites.
2. How we use it
- To run the app: your account, the map, reports, hunts, odds and alerts.
- To show your posts and hunt activity to other members as described in section 3.
- To keep the service secure and to fix problems.
- To respond when you contact us.
3. Who can see what
Cryptid Hunter only works when you're signed in. Nothing below is visible to people who aren't members.
What other members can see
- Your username, bio, profile photo and member-since date.
- Your counts: reports, votes received, followers and following.
- The reports, comments and hunts you post.
- A report's location:
- Pro members see its exact pin.
- Free members see an approximate area, shifted roughly a quarter mile to a mile and a half from the real spot.
- You always see your own exact pins.
- A hunt's meeting point.
What only your hunt party can see
During a live hunt, the members of that hunt see your live position, your track, and the logs, photos and audio shared in it.
What no other member can see
- Your email address
- Your home location and last-seen location
- Your votes and saved reports
- Your alerts
Photos and audio
Photos and audio attached to reports, plus profile and hunt cover photos, are stored at web addresses that anyone with the exact link can open. Media shared inside a hunt is restricted to that hunt's members.
4. Service providers
We use these companies to run the app, and they process data on our behalf:
- Supabase: hosting, database, file storage and sign-in. This holds all the account data and content described above.
- Mapbox: maps and place search. It receives map locations and the search text you type, and its map software may collect technical usage data under Mapbox's own privacy policy.
- Open-Meteo: weather for odds and conditions. It receives approximate coordinates.
- Apple and Google: sign-in, if you use them, and app distribution and subscription payments. See Apple's privacy policy and Google's privacy policy.
- Expo: delivers app updates. It receives technical information about your device and app version.
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of our users.
5. How long we keep it
We keep your information for as long as you have an account. When you delete your account, we delete it straight away, as described in section 6. Copies may remain in our hosting provider's backups for a limited time until those backups expire.
6. Deleting your account
In the app, go to Settings → Delete account. This takes effect immediately and deletes:
- your account, profile and settings
- your reports, with their photos and audio
- your comments, votes, saved reports and follows
- the hunts you host, with their media
- your hunt memberships, live positions and tracks, and the logs and marks you added to other people's hunts
You can also ask us to delete your data by emailing admin@bruthurs.com from the address on your account.
7. Your choices and rights
- You can turn off location, camera, photo and microphone access at any time in your device settings. Parts of the app that need them will stop working.
- You can edit or delete your posts and profile in the app.
- Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or export your personal information. Email admin@bruthurs.com and we'll respond within 30 days.
8. Security
Data is encrypted in transit and access-controlled, so members can only read what section 3 describes. We review these protections as the app changes.
9. Children
Cryptid Hunter is not intended for children under 13. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us information, email admin@bruthurs.com and we'll delete it.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll post the new version here with a new effective date. If the changes are significant, we'll also tell you in the app.
